How To Style Your Products For Photoshoots

Over 350 million photos are uploaded to Facebook and 95 million photos and videos are shared on Instagram daily, so how do you make your own product shoot stand out?

Using props such as backdrops and accessories can enhance your images to their full potential, by not only leading to great final shots but can also lead to increased conversion of product sales.

When creating lifestyle images for your brand it helps you to connect with your audience on a personal level as they feel they can resonate with you and your brand. It helps to create an aesthetic to allow the consumer to visualise themselves using your product.

You can also create aspirational settings to make your product stand out against other competition by changing backdrops every now and then and using other tools to boost the final image.

3 Ways to Style Your Products for Photoshoots

  • Backgrounds

  • Jewellery

  • Candles

Backgrounds

Using a backdrop is one of the easiest ways to add personality to your shoot. You can find them online to help suit your brand, such as a textured, floral or plain theme - whatever you think connects best with your business.

There are some websites I like to use myself and recommend for all DIY product photography in your own studio, find them here and here

All backdrops they sell are easy to clean, have amazing designs to choose from and are easy to store as they can be rolled up when not in use… What’s not to love?!

Jewellery

It can look very ‘samey’ to have a necklace laid out on a flat surface, so instead use items such as concrete trays or linen texture books to make your images look different from the rest.

Create layers with your styling for a lifestyle and UGC feel, keep decor simple as you want the main focus of the image to be the jewellery you’re advertising.

Try to avoid patterned props as this could disguise the product and make it hard for the audience to see.

You want to make your item stand out, not be distracted by the other content in the image.

Etsy has some great items made by small businesses, some of my favourites can be found here and here

Supporting small businesses and making your products stand out is a huge win.

Candles

Candle businesses are on the rise and since March 2021, UK consumers spent £418m on scented candles.

Do you own your own candle business? Here’s some of my must-have props to use when it comes to pimping up your photo gallery:

Matches: Obviously an essential when it comes to lighting a candle, and also creates an aesthetic look next to the candle/s of your choice.

Either lie the matches next to the candle, take action shots lighting the candle with the match or place next to the candle in the jar;  you could also try this with a matchstick holder like this one

Wick cutter: Using a wick cutter in the image can help to portray an easy and minimalistic setting, try using a white backdrop with the candle standing and the wick cutter laid next to it.

Tray: A candle tray is a great addition to create depth within your image. If you’re promoting more than one candle, use trays on different levels perched on books.

There are many different methods and tools to spruce up your own product shoots, but these are some of my favourites which are super easy and affordable, but ultimately make a huge impact on the final images.
